Area 51B is waiting.

This is the second article of the Antarctic Theories series. And please be warned, it’s for entertainment purposes only. Everything here is intended as a fictional fantasy.

Lo and behold the 7th continent, hidden 3791km Chile, home to the world’s most extreme temperatures/solar activity, and near-zero levels of inhabitance. I wonder what happened to the scientists stranded there at the pinnacle of the covid pandemic. It would be a great location for quarantine after all.

Anyways, besides an occasional tourist/scientist at the McMurdo station, there is close to zero geographic interest in the rest of the landmass. It is isolated. Isolated. You wouldn’t even wrap your head around how much-uncharted territory remains to be stepped on.

So if there was an extraterrestrial intelligence hive or a secret coup de e’tat military base, Antarctica wouldn’t be a bad choice of residence.

Imagine a nuclear fallout shelter, hidden 50 meters below the frosty surface, supplied with fresh drinking water from the ice, and electricity/heating from the petrol stores below. Food? Either through giant reserves, fishing sprees, or top-secret resupply missions — airspace is extremely restricted after all (except to mostly air force-sanctioned supply planes/coast guard’s polar star). Keep in mind, this is would be a highly technological base, yet still within the reach of modern engineering prowess.

What would be the point of all this? Well, assuming that satellite photos would be ineffective for six months (the sun doesn’t rise between March and September, leaving the continent dark 24 hours per day) — Aha, that’s how resupply missions can be carried out — and radar can’t catch anything below the ice, you would have a killer stronghold on dominating Antarctica when climate change collapses civilization on the other six continents. Or as an extraterrestrial species that is far more intelligent/skilled than humanity, using Antarctica as a desolate, secret, observation point physically located on the planet. Maybe for a temporary breeding ground prior to takeover.

Now, this is all just speculation. But is there a real conspiracy to be found?

To my knowledge, there has been plenty of 20th-century military activity in Antarctica, from Nazi whaling missions to U.S. exploration efforts. A lot of conspiracies have originated from such events. Check out Operation Deep Freeze, which still goes on to date. Deception Island is also pretty spooky.

In the end, although secretive in nature and perfect in location, there is no evidence to support my little theory. I’ll leave it to speculation for those still in doubt.

Maybe I should write an apocalypse-themed Antarctic military conspiracy theory realistic-fiction novel. Let me know in the comments. That said, Endurance, a non-fiction retelling of the first attempted foot-crossing of the Antarctic continent, is a worthy read.
